Our School

Punchbowl is a small, family orientated school, situated in a suburb five kilometres from the centre of Launceston Tasmania in a lovely natural bush setting. It has an enrolment of 300. Grades Prep to Six are housed on the main campus. Kindergarten caters for approximately 40 children and is currently sited on a separate campus in Wentworth street prior to moving into our new building at the main school site at the beginning of 2008.

Punchbowl has historical links with the pursuit of excellence.  This tradition continues. Teaching positions, senior staff positions and indeed student placement in the school from all around the greater Launceston area are highly sought after.

What this results in is a climate and environment that optimises the teaching, learning and playing conditions.   Children come to school prepared by their families for success.  Herein lies the greatest challenge for the school.  How do we cater for those children who come to school already successful?   How do we keep this tradition of excellence continuing?

Our mission is to take charge of our culture by providing a curriculum that strives for excellence and teaches children to act autonomously.  Punchbowl as a school has embraced the Essential Learning Framework (EL’s), Supportive School Communities Framework (SSC) and Information Communication and Technology (ICT) as the vehicles to pursue excellence.

Our curriculum is built on the foundations of active partnerships, thinking and communicating and has programs that include experiences in all curriculum areas. Our curriculum is designed to move children from being dependent to independent to that of interdependence.  Primarily this is done by formally teaching the children how to take responsibility for their own learning and behaviour.  Interdependence and resilience are the key attributes we wish children to develop as a result of being educated at this school besides being literate, numerate and computer literate.  ICT is one of the key areas by which we choose to teach children to be worthwhile contributors to our Launceston society.

Active Partnerships are pursued between children, the staff and the parent community.  Punchbowl as an education community is characterised by excellent formal and informal links and partnerships with its wider community – this is through the Parents and Friends Association and the School Council.
